Sunderland's Turner: Inter Milan experience invaluable

Sunderland defender Michael Turner says his spell at Inter Milan as a junior was a great boost for his career.

As a 16-year-old at Charlton he spent six months training on the banks of Lake Como with Inter Milan's youth set up, including a game against the first team that included Christian Vieri. They lost 7-0, but it is life experience that shaped him.

He told the Mirror: "I learned a lot of stuff out there. It put me in good stead for the future. I was rubbing shoulders with some really big names. We managed to have a few practise games with the first team, trained with them a couple of times as well.

"The likes of Vieri, Clarence Seedorf, Robbie Keane, he was there at the time, to name a few. Some great players. It made you think this is where you want to be, although it felt mad at the time!

"It's a country that really values defending, holding shirts, marking real tight at corners. I suppose I learned a few tricks. It was just a great time."
