Sunderland midfielder Kieran Richardson put his hand up after their Carling Cup elimination by Aston Villa on Tuesday night.
The former Manchester United star missed a glorious chance when he broke clear just two minutes from the end of extra-time against Aston Villa.
But he failed to beat keeper Brad Guzan, who went on to save three penalties as Villa won a dramatic shoot-out.
Richardson said: "I'm a confident lad and it was a one-on-one. I expected to score it. I'm sorry I didn't.
"There were a lot of chances for us and we couldn't stick one in."
