Sunderland young gun Watmore earns honours degree at university

Duncan Watmore has become just the second man in the UK to receive an honours degree at the same time as being a professional footballer.

The 21-year-old Sunderland forward has completed his first-class honours degree in economics and business management at the Newcastle University, snaring his results on Thursday.

Water, who has been juggling his studies with developing his game in Sunderland's youth academy, joins David Wetherall as the only other pro footballer to pick up a degree during their playing days.

Former Sheffield Wednesday, Leeds United and Bradford City defender Wetherall picked up his degree in chemistry from the University of Sheffield in 1992.

Watmore has also enjoyed a bright start to his senior career with the Black Cats, scoring on both his Premier League and League Cup debuts for the Wearside club.
