Sunderland has suspended Adam Johnson after the winger was arrested on Monday.
The 27-year old England international remains in custody and is assisting police with their enquiries regarding alleged sexual activity involving a 15-year old girl.
Former Middlesbrough and Manchester City attacking midfielder Johnson has been temporarily stood down by the Black Cats and is set to at least miss Tuesday night's Premier League trip to Hull City.
"Sunderland AFC has confirmed that Adam Johnson has been suspended from the club, pending the outcome of a police investigation," read a Sunderland statement.
"No further comment will be made at the present time."
