Sunderland boss Gus Poyet has convinced Toronto FC striker Jermain Defoe to make a move to Wearside.
The Telegraph says a deal, which will commit Defoe for the rest of this season and three further years, was agreed late on Tuesday between Sunderland and Toronto FC which will see the small striker return to the Premier League, with American forward Jozy Altidore moving in the opposite direction.
Poyet, who played with Defoe at Tottenham Hotspur, is thrilled that the Sunderland board have backed the move and agreed to pay the 32-year-old around £80,000-a-week.
The permanent transfer is worth around £6 million, although the precise fee for Defoe depends on how the clubs have valued Altidore, a hard-working but notoriously low-scoring striker.
