Sunderland striker Altidore thrilled to share Donovan's final USA appearance

Jozy Altidore has spoken of his delight at being able to play alongside Landon Donovan in his USA send-off match.

The nation's all-time leading scorer closed the curtain on a stunning international career on Friday in the 1-1 draw with Ecuador in Connecticut.

The match was LA Galaxy star Donovan's 157th for the US and Sunderland striker Altdiore admitted that it was a massive thrill to share it with such an icon of the game.

"The whole day will stick with me. What he represents for this team - I remember watching him as a little kid - and to share this moment with him is unbelievable," said Altidore.

"He built a lot of what you see today and we all know how special today was, how special he's been to the program. We wanted to go out there and play as well as possible.

"I tried to set him up a few times and do what he's always done for me. He's such a good player, you can still see that right away, and he has a smell for the game that other Americans don't have. We're going to miss that."
