The Black Cats forward took the captain's armband in the absence of Clint Dempsey and played a full 90 minutes as Juergen Klinsmann's side edged the Czechs in Prague.
After the match, Altidore tweeted of his honour at skippering his country and contributing to a hard-foughtr victory against a decent European opponent.
Such an honor to captain this team tonight! Well done to all the boys and thanks to the US fans who made us feel at home!! #USMNT— Jozy Altidore (@JozyAltidore) September 3, 2014
