Sunderland return unlikely as Matthews joins Bristol City

Adam Matthews appears to have played his last game for Sunderland.

The Evening Chronicle says Matthews' loan move to Championship strugglers Bristol City has signalled the end of his career on Wearside.

Matthews has joined City until the end of the season, just eight months after he signed a four-year contract with Sunderland after joining from Scottish champions Celtic in a £2m deal.

Matthews' loan move is a sign that he will be allowed to leave at the end of the season.

But his switch to Bristol has given him the chance to revive a career that was going nowhere at Sunderland.

“He's a quality, young signing who is hungry to play," said Robins' manager Lee Johnson.

“He moved to Sunderland for £2m and hasn't got in the team enough, so he's keen to come here and prove himself.

“People may think 'why do we need another right-back?' It's a number of things really. We're in the market for good players and that's what Adam is.

“He's quick with good technique. The risk and reward with any loan is how quickly you can get the player up to speed and get them integrated to the group."
