Former-Everton and Sunderland midfielder Steven Pienaar has returned to his home country South Africa to play for league champions Bidvest Wits.

The 35-year-old, who was released by Sunderland in the summer, has agreed to a one-year deal with the Johannesburg-based club on a one-year deal.

A statement on the club's website read: 'Bidvest Wits Football Club is pleased to announce the signing of Steven Pienaar who joins the club on a contract for one season with an option for a further season.'

Pienaar also played for sides like Ajax, Borussia Dortmund and Tottenham during his career.
