Sunderland are launching a £5 million bid for Sheffield United striker James Beattie.

Black Cats boss Roy Keane wants six new players this summer with experience and will try to sign those who know the English game, rather than take a gamble by signing from abroad.

Beattie, who has five England caps, attracted Middlesbrough's interest in January but Gareth Southgate is in the market for midfielders.
