Sunderland keeper Gordon full of praise for understudy Carson

Sunderland goalkeeper Craig Gordon is delighted to see understudy Trevor Carson win a first Northern Ireland call-up.

Gordon, who helps mentor Carson along with goalkeeping coach Nigel Spink, says his understudy has earned his international reward.

"It's a great boost for him," said the Scottish international. "I think he's got more appearances on the bench than either me and Marton (Fulop) have in the first team this season!

"I don't mean that disrespectfully - it's a big step up from coming through the youth ranks to being involved in the first team on a daily basis.

"It's been a good season for him, being involved in the first-team training and I've seen an improvement in him because of that."

Gordon continued: "I was speaking to Trevor before the Arsenal game, telling him that it's been a good season so far from him, culminating in getting picked for his national team.

"It'll be a great experience for him to train with the Northern Irish set-up and see what that's all about. It'll stand him in good stead for the future."
