Sunderland great Kevin Phillips early frontrunner to replace Ross

Sunderland great Kevin Phillips is the early frontrunner to replace Jack Ross as Black Cats manager.

Phillips, 46, scored 130 goals in 235 matches for the club between 1997 and 2003, including 30 in their first Premier League season in 1999-2000.

He has served as assistant coach to Paul Clement at Derby County and most recently worked as first-team coach to Gary Rowett at Stoke City.

The Daily Star says the former Watford striker is one of the names in the frame to take over at the Stadium of Light.

He could work alongside his former Black Cats team-mate Alex Rae, who has managerial experience from Dundee and St Mirren.
