Sunderland are chasing Aston Villa fullback Stephen Warnock.
The Daily Star says Warnock, 30, did not travel to Villa's final friendly at Werder Bremen on Saturday.
Instead, Villa manager Paul Lambert played Irish youngster Enda Stevens, 22, in Warnock's position.
Sunderland boss Martin O'Neill brought Warnock to Villa Park in 2009 and is an admirer.
