Sunderland bring in Congerton as new director

Sunderland have appointed Lee Congerton as their new sporting director.

The Welshman arrives at the Stadium of Light to replace chief scout Valentino Angeloni who parted ways with the club on Wednesday.

Congerton, who has previously worked with Wrexham, Liverpool and Chelsea, takes up the position after departing German club Hamburg SV.

Black Cats boss Gus Poyet told the club's official website: "I would like to welcome Lee to the club.

"Recruitment is one of the most important areas in football nowadays, so I'm looking forward to working alongside Lee for the best of the club."

While Congerton added: "I'm delighted to join Sunderland AFC and would like to thank the board and owner for this great opportunity.

"Working alongside Gus and his team was one of the influential factors in me joining the club and something that I am very much looking forward to."
