Sunderland boss Gus Poyet will welcome the appointment of new football director Lee Congerton.
The former Chelsea chief scout is set to quit his role as Hamburg's technical director and join the Black Cats this summer.
"Having a sporting director is normal all over the world," said Poyet, who has been assured by Short that he will have the final word on new signings.
"Here, the word can be seen as the devil but that does not have to be the case.
"The most important thing is the relationship between the manager and that person. It needs to be spot on with both heading in the same direction, otherwise it won't work. For me it is natural and it is something I don't worry about at all."
