Sunderland boss Keane happy with Waghorn debut

Sunderland boss Roy Keane had praise for 17 year-old Martyn Waghorn after his debut in yesterday's 4-0 home defeat by Manchester United.

The striker from South Shields had never featured in a first-team 16. But having caught Keane's eye when he scored a hat-trick against Norwich in an FA Youth Cup third-round tie on December 11, the teenager was drafted into Sunderland's starting line-up.

"I thought he did well," Keane told The Journal. "We've got no doubts about him, he's a talented kid. He's strong and I thought his touch was assured. I'm delighted with him and I hope he has a long and successful career at Sunderland. Martyn has learned that the Premier League is a tough, tough place. But he looked comfortable."
