Sunderland boss Bruce turns to Da Silva after Mensah setback

Sunderland boss Steve Bruce is ready to call on Paulo da Silva to replace the injured John Mensah.

In the African's absence, Da Silva - who was given extended leave because of World Cup duty - is expected to deputise and Bruce insists that the South American is ready to impress.

"Paulo has the benefit of a full season in English football behind him now at Sunderland and I really think this could be a big season for him coming up," said Bruce.

"I think he's ready to show people what he's all about after having an excellent World Cup."
