Sunderland boss Steve Bruce intends to sell in January to fund his own transfer plans.
Primed to be offloaded is defender Anton Ferdinand, who has been linked with Tottenham.
The Sun says Bruce needs to fund a joint £12m raid for Wigan defender Maynor Figueroa and Middlesbrough winger Adam Johnson.
He said: "I don't want a huge squad."
