Sunderland boss Bruce refuses to buy for sake of it in January

Sunderland boss Steve Bruce says he won't buy for the sake of it in January.

Bruce admits he does not like to do business in January, as many clubs are unwilling to let key players go - and those that do charge a premium.

He said: "It's very difficult to buy players in January.

"Clubs don't want to sell. If you try to bring in players in January, you have to pay a premium.

"And if you can't get the ones you are after, it is just pointless.

"It's better to wait until the summer when you can bring in the players that you have identified as the ones you want at your football club. One thing I have never done is buy for the sake of buying.

"Any player you bring in has got to improve the squad and has got to be better than what you have already. It's never easy in January, but we'll see what's available."
