Espanyol striker Wu Lei's equaliser in their draw with Barcelona stunned homeland China on Saturday.

Wu Lei scored a memorable equalising goal which sent social media in the Asian region into a frenzy.

The hashtag #GoldeWuLei had more than 220 million engagements on China's own version of Twitter, with Chinese football fans embracing the impact their own hero had on such an important match.

Traditional media sources also paid the goal attention with the state broadcaster in China showing the match live.

"I am very happy to score, but also to achieve such an important point," Wu Lei admitted in his post-match interview.

"We hope to get more points and more victories.

"I want to thank the fans because they have allowed us to gain confidence, we're all a family."
