Strachan sees Middlesbrough job as long term project

Middlesbrough boss Gordon Strachan admits it could take years for his masterplan for the club to be fully implemented. While he is confident progress has been made since he replaced Gareth Southgate in October, Strachan knows his ultimate aim is still some way away.

He said: "I sense we have got players who can play and scrap - it's a horrible word scrap - play intense football matches, let's call it that.

"There are signs there we are getting harder to beat - that's the first thing you have to do. Then you have to set a standard that you can win games of football.

"Hopefully, we will get closer and closer to that. It's an ongoing thing - it might take years to get it perfectly correct."
