Stoke give thumbs down to standing areas

Stoke City have no plans to introduce a safe standing area at the Britannia Stadium. Potters chairman Peter Coates claims that he does not want to venture out to implement the idea because of financial reasons.

"I can see clubs that are redeveloping stands or building a new stadium looking into the possibility, but not clubs with all-seaters," The Sentinel reports.

"I don't see anything happening any time soon for those clubs, which would include ourselves, because of different financial priorities.

"I don't have any objection in principle to safe standing, as long as they are safe, but there is the financial question.

"And even then, we would still have to know what the police, the Premier League and the Football Association were thinking on this matter."

Angela Smith, chair of the Stoke Supporters' Council, added: "I prefer sitting at a football match myself, so I have no real passion for the return of standing at games."
