Stoke defender Cameron eager for Begovic to sign new contract

Geoff Cameron is positive regarding the Stoke City future of Asmir Begovic.

The Bosnia-Herzegovina goalkeeper has a year to run on his Potters deal and is being linked with a number of Premier League rivals.

Stoke boss Mark Hughes recently dropped Begovic in order to hand the gloves to promising talent Jack Butland but central defender Cameron does not believe it has placed the 27-year olds long-term Britannia Stadium future in doubt.

"Asmir's a good friend of mine. I don't know the full situation, and I wouldn't want to speak for him, but he has proved he's a world-class keeper," said Cameron.

"Maybe the gaffer just wanted to give some of the younger guys an opportunity towards the end of the season."

Of the prospect of Begovic signing a new deal, Cameron added: "I hope so.

"He's a great guy to have in the locker room - a proven, quality keeper.

"I think it's good to have the competition. Jack has pushed Asmir to new levels, and Asmir has raised Jack's game too - that's good for both of them."
