Stoke chairman Coates sees son as eventual successor

Stoke City chairman Peter Coates sees his 39 year-old son John as his eventual successor.

"John is hugely knowledgeable about football," said the chairman. "He has followed Stoke since a boy.

"I did hear somewhere about him going to Manchester United and being a fan, but that's a nonsense.

"He's also of huge value to Tony Pulis and in my view would be an excellent chairman ... if that's what he wants to do."

Coates jnr is currently at the forefront of the family's expanding internet gambling business bet365, but steals away from his office in time to catch kick-off at the Britannia on a Saturday afternoon.

"We have got a very large business which takes up a lot of his time," Coates snr acknowledged. "That would be a decision for the future and dependant on what he wanted to do."
