Stoke boss Hughes stunned by Shawcross' latest England snub

Stoke City boss Mark Hughes is stunned by Ryan Shawcross' latest England snub.

Hughes is puzzled that his captain's outstanding form is not being recognised on the international stage.

He said: "In terms of Ryan Shawcross I was surprised and he hasn't had a look in since the Sweden game.

"Since I've come here he's been arguably our best player to produce on a regular basis. He's got a lot of experience and if you look at England there's not a lot of senior leadership there.

"We've got a young man here who has 200 odd games as club captain and has leadership qualities he could bring to the squad. My view is that he deserves another look.

"They're all good players involved but you look at the Everton side at the moment aren't defending as well as they would like and three of their defenders are in the squad. There's a case for players playing well getting the opportunity.

"He may have to be patient but we can't really ask the boy to play any better than he has over the last 12 months.

"I'm not telling the powers that be how to do their job but I just think he's done well enough to get an opportunity and other people seem to be leap-frogging him at the moment. He just needs a bit of recognition for how well he's done."
