Steve Bruce: This time I could not turn Newcastle down

Steve Bruce says he couldn't turn down the Newcastle United job.

Bruce has now bossed bitter rivals in Birmingham, Sheffield and the North East.

He said: “My dad used to say I am mad full stop. It is just the way it has worked out. I have worked in three cities for rival clubs. How lucky am I to be involved after 20 years and still going.

“This time I could not turn Newcastle down. It is coming home. Newcastle never leaves you.

“If results go your way and it is positive, everything is OK. When you are up against it you need that support. Newcastle fans will be there cheering their team, unwavering in their support, when the season starts.

“I understood Rafa was that popular. Whoever stood in his shoes... they are big boots to fill. There are not a lot of Rafa Benitez's out there. But it is the dream job."
