Stekelenburg buoyed by Southampton clean sheet

Southampton goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg is happy to have earned his first clean sheet for the Saints.

Southampton played out a drab 0-0 draw against Watford on Sunday and there were very few positives for the Saints to look back upon from the clash.

However, the clean sheet would have been a boost for Southampton after letting in three against Everton last week and Stekelenburg is happy to have got off the mark for his new club.

Stekelenburg, who is on loan from Fulham, said: "Yes, it's always nice. It's been the third (Premier League) game already, so I hope it was a little bit sooner but just happy with the clean-sheet and unlucky we didn't win.

"We changed the system a little bit today. We had five defenders because we conceded too many goals in the last two games and that helped.

"I think, on the whole, they didn't get a lot of chances and we created not a lot, a few small ones, but not a lot. We have to be better but the basics start by defending."
