Standard Liege chief: Arsenal really wanted Zinho Vanheusden

Standard Liege chief Michel Preud'homme says they beat Arsenal to the signing of defender Zinho Vanheusden.

The Gunners had a centre-back at the top of their wishlist this summer and shortlisted Vanheusden, according to Preud'homme.

However, the 20-year-old was convinced to stay at the club and snub a move to the Emirates.

“Last season he showed his qualities,' Preud'homme told Het Laatste Nieuws.

“That is why we have invested heavily in keeping him here.

“At a certain point Arsenal seriously knocked at the door, but we were able to convince Zinho to stay and we are happy about that."

Vanheusden made 30 appearances for Standard last season after joining on loan from Inter Milan.
