Luka Modric wants to stay in London.
Chelsea saw a £22 million offer for the Croatia midfielder rejected by Tottenham on Wednesday night.
The London Evening Standard says Modric has been on their list for some time, but his performance in Tottenham's 2-1 Premier League defeat to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in April is believed to have impressed billionaire owner Roman Abramovich and convinced him to make the necessary funds available.
He still has five years left on his current deal but even though he has told close friends he is happy to stay at White Hart Lane, boss Harry Redknapp admitted a few days ago that he feared his head had already been turned.
Chelsea, who are expected to appoint Guus Hiddink as their manager in the next fortnight, would be prepared to make him one of their highest-paid players and double his salary to £100,000 a week.
