Spurs hero Waddle calls for radical foreign quotas for Premier League

Tottenham hero Chris Waddle wants radical limits on foreign players in the Premier League.

Waddle says English football is in decline.

He told the Daily Express: "We have seen Greg Dyke on about quotas, but listen we have got to say, like it or not, you can only have five foreigners on the pitch.

"We had the three foreigner rule before and when I was at Marseille I was one of the foreigners. You could bring a foreign player on, but to do so you had to take one off.

"You have to say the nucleus of the team is English. It has got to be more. The only way to do that is to set a law.

"If the Premier League was the third or fourth worst paid league in the world, we would have seven English players in every team. That is the problem.

"Not coaching - money. That is the biggest problem.

"The Premier League is the richest league and players say, 'I like Spain but I will go to England for four years make a fortune and then I'll come back to Spain.'

"If you turned round and said, 'We have a problem. We can only pay the same as France now' they'd all be gone."
