Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen has jumped to the defence of Roberto Soldado after his glaring miss in defeat to Europa League opponents Dnipro. It was one of the misses of the season and even prompted former Tottenham chairman Alan Sugar to ridicule Soldado on Twitter.
Sugar said: "Is Soldado a donkey or what? My old grandmother could have scored that one."
Vertonghen hit back: "I think that is unfair. I don't know Sugar, but I think Roberto deserves better.
"Sometimes those ones are easier to score than miss, but it's more difficult than you think. It's sad for him because he scores from every angle in training.
"He's a very smart guy and there is nobody who wants to score more than him - It's his life."
