Spread betting firms pay price for Premier League goal glut

The Premier League is in the midst of a goalscoring glut led by Arsenal and Chelsea that may make good viewing for spectators but has cost more than one spread betting firm a seven-figure sum. The normal average of goals per game in the English top flight is less than 2.4. This season the average is almost three goals per game, at 2.98.

With more buyers than sellers of total goals spreads a general rule, the high-scoring games this season - including a seven-goal Manchester derby and 6-2 and 6-1 wins for Arsenal - have left one firm, Sporting Index, £1.5 million worse off, according to London newspaper City AM.
