Sporting Kansas City's Sapong scoops MLS Rookie of the Year prize

Sporting Kansas City forward CJ Sapong has been named the 2011 MLS Rookie of the Year.

The 22-year old scored five goals and provided five assists whilst appearing in all 34 regular season matches in an impressive debut season.

Sapong, who was drafted by SKC with the number 10 pick in the 2011 SuperDraft from James Madison University, said it was 'humbling' to receive an individual award such as this so early in his professional career but preferred to share the achievement with his teammates who he feels made it possible.

"Receiving this honor is very humbling, but it would never have been a possibility without the help of so many people," he said.

"Our goal at Sporting Kansas City is to do everything as a team, and I am so thankful for my teammates and the coaching staff.

"My parents have been a huge influence in my life and have kept me level-headed, and all of my friends and family back in Virginia and at James Madison, plus all the great Sporting Kansas City fans in make winning the 2011 MLS Rookie of the Year even more special."
