The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has announced that it will break its kit supply contract with German sportswear brand Adidas for the country's national teams, reports, www.sportspromedia.com/.

The contract between the pair currently runs until 2026 but the RFEF has decided to revoke its agreement with Adidas seven years early.

Adidas has produced Spanish national team apparel since 1991 and, according to reports, pays €18 million (US20.1 million) per season. That figure pales in comparison to the Football Association's (FA) UK£33.33 million (US$41.88 million) a season deal with Nike to provide apparel for the English national teams.

In a statement on the body's website, the RFEF said: 'The conditions that were agreed upon when it was signed years ago do not meet the criteria of legality, transparency and fairness that the RFEF considers minimally acceptable.'

The RFEF also confirmed that it had begun the search for a new supplier but noted that whilst this search is ongoing, it will adhere to its contractual commitments with Adidas.

If the split does go ahead, Adidas will be due compensation in some form due to the remaining length of the contract.

Spanish publication AS reported earlier this month that RFEF president Luis Rubiales had contacted Inditex, whose brands include Zara and Pull & Bear, regarding one of the firm's designer brand producing apparel for the Spanish national teams.

The Madrid outlet also claims that the RFEF has engaged talks with Puma regarding a potentially replacing Adidas.

Adidas responded to the RFEF's statement saying: 'Both entities signed a contract extension in 2015 which is in force until 2026. The contract has been carried out by both parties amicably and there is no reason to justify the resolution that the RFEF intends.'
