Spain and Portugal play out draw in Nations League opener

Spain and Portugal played out a 1-1 draw to kickoff their Nations League campaign.

Alvaro Morata for Spain and Portugal's Ricardo Horta were their names on the scoresheet.

The draw will certainly make Portugal the happier of the two sides, as Luis Enrique's men lacked the killer punch needed to put the match away.

After finding it difficult to leave their mark in the final third, Spain took the lead thanks to well-worked counter started by Gavi. The Barcelona midfielder picked out Pablo Sarabia, with the ball then landing at Morata's feet. Despite pressure from Danilo and Pepe, Morata fired home to the delight of the home fans.

The goal seemed to unsettle Portugal, as Carlos Soler missed out on doubling Spain's advantage after some more great work from Gavi.

Portugal responded after the restart, forcing Unai Simon into a great save when he denied Rafael Leao, while Spain struggled to keep hold of the ball. The inclusion of Koke and Dani Olmo helped rectify that, while Portugal responded by bringing on Cristiano Ronaldo and Goncalo Guedes.

The equaliser came with less than 10 minutes remaining when Joao Cancelo cut in from the right and picked out Horta, who scored in what was his first cap in eight years.
