Southgate urged to give chance to Newcastle striker Wilson

Former Everton and Wales defender Ashley Williams is not sure why Newcastle ace Callum Wilson is struggling for game time at the World Cup.

The England striker is in Gareth Southgate's squad as backup to captain Harry Kane.

Wilson did come on and grab an assist in the 6-2 win over Iran, but he did not feature in the 0-0 draw with USA on Friday.

Speaking to the BBC post-match, ex-Wales captain Williams stated: “I'm pretty sure Callum Wilson is sitting there tonight watching the game thinking 'when am I going to see any minutes of this World Cup?'

“We know Harry Kane is one of the best strikers in the world, without a doubt.

“But it was not his best game and he did look fatigued. In the context of the 90 minutes, I think it probably is a good point for England."
