Southgate sends World Cup warning to Man Utd forward Rooney

England manager Gareth Southgate has implied that Wayne Rooney needs to play more if he wants to be included in England's 2018 World Cup squad.

Rooney was left out of the Three Lions squad for their upcoming qualifier against Scotland and friendly with France, the second time he has missed out on selection this season.

England's all-time leading goal scorer has been unable to maintain a consistent starting role under Jose Mourinho at Manchester United, and Southgate believes the 31-year old must factor in playing time when evaluating his career this summer.

"From Wayne's point of view, he has obviously not played very much this season. Others have come into the [England] squad and done really well," said Southgate.

"As far as I am concerned, Wayne, it would appear, has got some decisions to make across the summer regarding next season.

"But the hope is he is back playing really well and with a player of his quality there is no way we would dismiss him from the future."
