Southampton have failed with a £6.8million bid for Dinamo Zagreb's Marko Rog, according to the Daily Star.

The Croatian club have reportedly slapped a price tag of £12.8m on the 21-year-old midfielder, who was heavily linked with Liverpool last summer.

Spanish club Villarreal and Italian outfit Napoli are also keeping tabs on the Croatia international, but the Saints remain hopeful that they will be able to lure the player to the Premier League.

Claude Puel's Saints are expected to go back for the player with an improved bid in the coming days.
