Southampton striker Austin delighted with brace in Brentford draw

Southampton striker Charlie Austin was delighted with his brace in their draw with Brentford.

Austin looked to have won it for Mauricio Pellegrino's men when he cancelled out Lasse Vibe's opener with a goal that showed the sort of predatory instincts he has become renowned for, before converting from Sam McQueen's cross for the lead.

And despite the hosts equalising late on, the striker felt it was a perfect continuation of the work they have been doing.

“In the first-half the lads put in a good shift and unfortunately we went a goal behind. To be fair, it was a hell of a touch that took Jan out of the game," Austin reflected.

“I think we had enough chances to go 1-0 up ourselves and take the lead.

“I'm happy with myself getting 60 minutes and I think the team performed very well.

“It was a draw but pre-season is always about implementing what the manager wants."

On his goals, Austin added: “Strikers just want to see the ball in the net. It doesn't matter whether it's pre-season, in training or when the season starts.

“Confidence starts from the first day of training so it's nice to get two under my belt early on."
