Southampton manager Ronald Koeman has ruled skipper Jose Fonte out of the Capital One Cup quarter-final clash with Liverpool.

The Portuguese defender suffered a gash above his knee in the 3-1 defeat against Manchester City on Saturday and will not be available for Wednesday night's clash with the Reds.

However, Koeman expects Fonte to be fit for the Premier League clash with Aston ?illa on the weekend.

"Jose is not fit for tomorrow," Koeman said on Tuesday.

"He still has the cut above his knee with the stitches. We are hopeful that he can play this Saturday, but tomorrow is too early."
