Southampton's Schneiderlin plays down tackle on West Ham's Diame

Southampton midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin has defended himself after being criticised for a strong challenge on West Ham United's Mohamed Diame in Sunday's 0-0 draw.

The French midfielder produced a studs-up tackle on the Senegal international in the first half at St Mary's but for some reason, referee Andre Marriner did not even reward a free-kick.

Hammers boss Sam Allardyce was none too pleased with the lack of protection Diame received but Schneiderlin feels he did not orchestrate a sinister attack on his opponent.

"I need to see the image again but at that moment I didn't think I had done anything wrong," he told Sky Sports 1.

"I didn't have the feeling at the time that it was bad, I am not a player who commits those kind of fouls.

"If I touched him in any way I apologise but I have not the feeling that I did anything wrong."
