Southampton are set to battle it out with Newcastle United for the signature of Sporting Lisbon defender Ruben Semedo.

The Saints are likely to have to bring in a capable centre-back to replace Virgil van Dijk, who is reportedly close to an exit from the club.

Now according to reports from The Mirror, Southampton are currently targeting a move for Portuguese Under-21 international Semedo.

Newcastle United have previously been linked with the £12.5million-rated 23-year-old.
