Southampton legend Channon blasts Van Dijk sale: How many Saints do Liverpool want?

Southampton legend Mick Channon has hit out at Liverpool over their latest raid on St Mary's.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp's latest raid on St Mary's saw the capture of Virgil van Dijk for a world-record £75 million fee for a defender.

The Dutchman follows Adam Lallana, Sadio Mane, Dejan Lovren, Nathaniel Clyne and the retired Rickie Lambert — who were all poached from Southampton by the Reds.

Channon told The Sun: “How many players do they want?

“It's depressing for the fans paying good money that every transfer window one club can come and cherry-pick your best players. Liverpool have ripped the heart out of Southampton. Clubs like Southampton have no chance. What's more frustrating is a lot of the players are signed but are seen as no more than squad players."

Channon, who won 46 England caps, added: “I'm disappointed to see a good player leave Southampton but I understand as it's great business on their part. But you can only survive for so long by selling your best players.

“I've feared for Southampton for a while and I do so even more now. They are already in a relegation fight."
