Southampton eyeing Twente defender Martina

Southampton are believed to be close to signing FC Twente defender Cuco Martina.

The versatile 25-year old Dutch-born Curacao player who has been capped 20 times by the Dutch Caribbean island, played under Erwin Koeman, brother of Southampton manager Ronald, and has been at Twente for the last two years.

The natural right-back, who can play across various areas of defence, will be brought in after England left-back Ryan Bertrand was ruled out for up to six weeks with an injury. Koeman said: "We are interested in him and it's close, it's close... That player is available for three of the four positions in defence, and so would give us more players for a tough season."
