Southampton defender Maya Yoshida: We showed great character, passion and desire

Southampton defender Maya Yoshida says there's plenty of positives to draw from their 1-1 result with Watford.

Yoshida was involved in a major talking point, as Charlie Austin's shot found the net but was adjudged to have deflected off Saints' offside defender, before Jose Holebas fired Watford level eight minutes from time.

“We're upset, of course, because I feel like we dropped two points – especially with the wrong decision from the referee," Yoshida said.

“But I think we played much better today, showing great character, passion and desire.

“In the second half, everyone was fighting a lot, but unfortunately we couldn't get the three points.

“The referee thought I touched the ball, but I didn't – it's as simple as that.

“It was the wrong decision, but it's part of football. Maybe everyone will talk about VAR, but I don't like VAR, and there's no point talking about that.

“I want to talk about our character and performance today. I know the fans really want to watch a winning game, which we did for a long time, so we're really disappointed."
