Southampton boss Hughes: McCarthy can handle England call

Southampton boss Mark Hughes says goalkeeper Alex McCarthy could handle an England call.

England coach Gareth Southgate watched McCarthy and first-choice Jordan Pickford at Everton last Saturday as he weighs up his options ahead of next month's international double-header. Southgate's squad is to face Spain and Switzerland.

"Technically Gareth will know he's a very accomplished keeper, so if he gets the call I see no reason he won't impress people once he gets there," Hughes said ahead of today's home game against Leicester.

"It's the mark of a top-quality keeper when they make saves at key moments in games, make saves to protect results or situations you find yourself in and enable you to have that defensive platform to see results to a conclusion. Alex did that on a number of occasions last year."
