Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl admits new signing Willy Caballero could start against Arsenal.

It has been a whirlwind week for the 40-year-old, who was without a club just days ago.

However, following injuries to both Alex McCarthy and Fraser Forster, free agent Caballero was swiftly drafted in with Harry Lewis the club's only other senior goalkeeper.

Caballero has not played a competitive game since a 3-3 Premier League draw with Chelsea at West Bromwich Albion in September 2020.

Asked if Caballero could make his debut against Arsenal, the Saints boss said: "Yes, it is likely possible.

"We worked with him with some information, video clips, so he knows how he has to play with the ball and against the ball. It is also important for the goalkeeper that he puts his strength on the pitch.

"He is a smart guy, very good guy. He is fit. He is coming in with the willingness to help us and this is what we need now."

Discussing what the former Manchester City man can bring to the squad, Hasenhuttl added: "We were looking for a few options and he was by far the best for us, because of his experience, he is good on the ball, he knows how to play out from behind, he knows how to stay high and defend behind a high defensive line in some moments.

"So a good package I think for us.

"And hopefully Andrew (Sparkes, goalkeeper coach) brings him on the level for the weekend that we need, because I'm sure that we need against Arsenal also a goalkeeper who makes some saves!

"We'll try to defend everything so there are not so many chances for them, but in a few moments we will need him and therefore we hopefully see him making a good performance."
