Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl felt luck wasn't with their for their 2-3 defeat at home to Wolves.

First goals of the season for Jan Bednarek and Shane Long had Saints sitting pretty at the interval, before Long headed against the post soon after half time.

Instead of leading 3-0, Hasenhüttl's men were pegged back to 2-1 by Pedro Neto, before Raúl Jiménez struck twice – once from the penalty spot – to complete the turnaround.

“As everybody sees, we had a good first half and a not so good second half," the boss said.

“The opponent showed how you can turn the table with a few lucky moments, and I think we had a chance to score the third goal, when we were a little bit unlucky with the Longy header on to the post."

All three Wolves goals were reviewed by VAR, with the penalty decision overruling referee Darren England, who initially awarded a corner for Jack Stephens's sliding challenge on Jonny.

“In the end, the decision for the penalty is hard to understand for me, because I think the referee did a good job and I don't know why he let VAR overrule him," Hasenhüttl added.

“It was not clearly wrong, and it's not good for the fans in the stadium, because taking decisions outside the ground is not what we want to see from the VAR in my opinion.

“We have to accept it and stand up again. Congratulations to Wolves – they showed what a strong mentality they have, to turn such a game, and we must learn from this lesson.

“We did a good job in the last weeks, but if we don't carry on defending as we did, we can immediately concede goals. That was not the way we wanted to do it in the second half."
