Southampton boss Hasenhuttl admits Højbjerg could lose captaincy

Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl admits Pierre-Emile Højbjerg could lose the captaincy if he maintains his contract stand.

With just over a year to run on his current deal, Saints have been attempting to secure the midfielder to new terms - without success.

And Hasenhuttl, who penned a four-year deal this week, warned: "I don't think the situation would be good for him. As a leader, you can't lead your team without extending your contract.

"It's not good to go into the last year of your contract.

"It is not the ideal situation, but we have opportunities to deal with it and we get to talk to other players and then we make a decision."
