Southampton academy chief Matt Hale has welcomed their deal for Alexandre Jankewitz.
The teenager this week completed a move from Servette.
"We've seen Alex play for his country at two difference age groups and played well. He's constantly effecting the game, having a big impact and that's the potential we've recognised," Hale told the club's website.
"We put a lot of emphasis on young players at this club and when the market opens up, we need to ensure we're competitive.
"Obviously we need to look for opportunities outside of England, to supplement the young players and talent we already have at the club.
"Our footprint is widening, so we've now got the ability to bring the likes of Alex to the club.
"We're continually raising our bar in terms of bringing players of Alex's calibre to the club at a young age.
"It is a significant move for us, and the level of player that we're looking to acquire now shows our intent in that area."
